The handle is the reason to own one

Buoyancy helps a tired dog stay level in the water. The handle is what lets you lift them out of it — off a boat, up a dock ladder, out of a pool with no shallow end, or up a steep riverbank. If you have ever tried to haul a soaking dog up by the collar, you already know the problem this solves.

Foam panels — nothing to inflate

The buoyancy comes from foam sewn into the side panels, so there's nothing to blow up before your dog gets in the water and nothing to puncture once they're in it. Put it on, clip the buckles, go.

Who it suits

• Dogs new to water, or paddling further than they used to
• Boat and kayak days, where the handle matters as much as the float
• Strong swimmers too — the neon makes them far easier to keep track of at distance
• Older dogs who still love a swim but tire sooner than they did

Getting the fit right

Fit is what makes a life jacket work, so it's worth five minutes:

• Measure the chest at its widest, just behind the front legs, and the back from neck to tail base — go by those numbers rather than your dog's weight
• Tighten so you can slide two fingers under the straps and no more; a loose jacket rides up towards the head in water
• Try it on dry land first, then in shallow water, before anywhere deep

Sizes run S, M and L, cut to small and medium proportions. It's buoyancy assistance and a good handhold for a dog you're already keeping an eye on — the same way a life jacket works for the rest of us. We don't hold marine certification paperwork for this one, so if you need a vest tested to a published standard, that's a specialist buy.

Care

Rinse with fresh water after every swim, especially in salt or chlorine, and hang it to dry fully before it goes away. Packing it damp is how the panels start to smell.
